Tesla Wall Connector Installation in Carlsbad

Most Carlsbad Wall Connector jobs need two approvals, not one: the city's expedited EV charger permit and, in Aviara, Bressi Ranch or La Costa, the HOA's architectural committee. We mount and hardwire the Wall Connector, set it to match the circuit and connect it to your Wi-Fi in the Tesla app before we leave. We can also put together the route, load calculation and spec sheet your HOA application asks for.

Our own in-house team performs the work.

Getting a Wall Connector approved in Carlsbad

The city permit is the quick part

Carlsbad gives home EV chargers an expedited permit, as state law requires. The application goes in online through the city's Customer Self Service portal as a Residential PME permit, with the B-1 application, the B-65A eligibility checklist, a B-36 circuit card and Tesla's installation specifications for the Wall Connector. Once the fee is paid, the system issues the approved permit and inspection card the next business day. One inspection after the wiring and charger are in is normally all it takes, and a representative of the installing contractor has to be there for it. That is us.

The HOA is the slow part

If your home is in an association, its approval runs separately from the city's. California Civil Code section 4745 stops an HOA from banning a charger in your own garage or assigned space, or from adding rules that significantly raise its cost or cut its performance. It can still ask for an application and set reasonable standards. It has to answer in writing, and an application it hasn't denied within 60 days of receiving it is deemed approved, unless the delay comes from a reasonable request for more information. Mounting the Wall Connector inside the garage usually keeps the committee's questions short, because nothing new shows from the street.

Charging on Clean Energy Alliance power

Unless you've opted out, your electricity in Carlsbad comes from Clean Energy Alliance, the city's community power provider. SDG&E still delivers it and sends the bill. SDG&E's EV-TOU-5 plan is open to community power customers too. Its cheapest hours run from midnight to 6 a.m. every day and until 2 p.m. on weekends and holidays, and its most expensive run from 4 to 9 p.m. A charging schedule in the Tesla app that starts after midnight puts nearly every mile in the cheap window.

What San Diego homeowners say

Frequently asked questions

Does my Carlsbad HOA have to approve a Tesla Wall Connector?

It can require an application, but it can't ban a charger in your own garage or assigned space, or impose rules that significantly raise its cost or reduce its performance. Under Civil Code section 4745 the decision has to be in writing, and an application that isn't denied within 60 days is deemed approved. We can document the route, the load calculation and the Wall Connector's specifications for the committee.

How long does a Carlsbad EV charger permit take?

Carlsbad processes home EV chargers as an expedited permit. After the online application is in and the fee is paid, the approved permit and inspection card are issued the next business day. The job normally needs a single inspection once the charger is installed. We file the permit and meet the inspector.

Do I need a separate meter to get an EV rate in Carlsbad?

No. SDG&E's EV-TOU-5 plan uses your existing meter and prices the whole home on EV time-of-use rates, and SDG&E publishes those prices for Clean Energy Alliance customers as well. Only the older EV-TOU plan needs a second meter for the car. Whether EV-TOU-5 saves you money depends on how much of your household use you can keep out of the 4 to 9 p.m. window.

Ready to charge at home?

Send a photo of your panel and where the car parks. We quote a fixed price and carry out the installation ourselves.
