Tesla Wall Connector Installation in Encinitas
On a Leucadia or Cardiff cottage the panel often sits on an outside wall, and the best spot for the Wall Connector is right beside it, on a short circuit with the cable reaching the driveway. That makes the details of an outdoor install matter: protecting the wiring from coastal air, choosing a setting the older 100A service can carry, and making sure a Tesla parked on the street can't use your charger. We sort out all three before you get a fixed price.

An outdoor Wall Connector near the Encinitas coast
What the weather rating covers
Tesla rates the Universal Wall Connector NEMA Type 3R and IP54 for outdoor mounting, with an operating range of -22°F to 122°F. Type 3R is a rain and sleet rating, not a marine corrosion rating, so a few blocks from the water the parts around the charger matter as much as the charger: the conduit, the fittings and the connections at the panel. Mount it under an eave or on a wall out of the prevailing wind where you can, and put the cable back on its holster after each charge.
Keeping it yours
A charger beside the driveway can be seen from the street, and any Tesla can plug into an unsecured unit. Charging Access Control solves that without a lock. When the Wall Connector is commissioned in the Tesla app, you choose which vehicles can charge, and any other Tesla is refused. Tesla notes the feature works only with Tesla vehicles.
The Encinitas permit
Encinitas takes EV charger permits only through its online Customer Self Service portal, with the city's BLD-119 checklist. The submittal is a short digital plan set: a title page, Tesla's installation specifications and a load calculation, stamped by a C-10 contractor or an electrical engineer. The circuit has to be sized at 125 percent of the charger's continuous load, which is why a 48-amp Wall Connector sits on a 60-amp breaker. A site plan is waived only when the charger goes inside the house or garage, so an outdoor mount can add one more sheet. The city's goal for expedited EV permits is 1 to 3 business days.

Frequently asked questions
Can a Tesla Wall Connector be mounted outside near the beach?
Yes. Tesla rates it NEMA Type 3R and IP54 for outdoor use. That rating covers rain rather than salt corrosion, so near the water the conduit, fittings and panel connections need corrosion-resistant parts, and a spot out of direct wind helps the whole installation last.
How do I stop other Teslas from charging on my driveway charger?
Turn on Charging Access Control when the Wall Connector is commissioned in the Tesla app, and choose the vehicles allowed to charge. Other Teslas that plug in won't charge. No lock or key is needed.
How long does an Encinitas EV charger permit take?
Encinitas aims to review expedited EV charger permits in 1 to 3 business days. Applications go in online through its Customer Self Service portal, and the inspection is booked through the same portal once the charger is installed. We file the application and meet the inspector.
