Tesla Wall Connector Installation in Del Mar
Del Mar is a small city with a careful process. Electrical permits go in online, inspections can usually be booked for the next day, and the step that takes longest is design review, if any part of the work shows from outside. That is why keeping the Wall Connector and its wiring inside the garage is usually the simplest path here. Because so many Del Mar homes are custom builds, we look at the panel and the garage before we quote.

Del Mar's process for a Wall Connector
The permit and the inspection
Del Mar takes electrical permit applications online through eTRAKiT and no longer accepts paper, and a new 240V circuit for a Wall Connector is an electrical permit. If the job grows into a building permit, such as a new wall or structure for the charger, the plans go to the Planning Department for review first, by email, before plan check. Inspections are booked by phone at 858-375-9528 or by email, and a request made by 4 p.m. can get next-day service. We file the permit and meet the inspector.
Where design review comes in
Del Mar sorts exterior changes into three tracks: exempt, administrative design review, and a full Design Review Board hearing. Administrative review is decided by the planning director after a 10-day notice period, and an objection during that window sends the project to the board. The city's applicant guide doesn't list EV chargers under any track, so planning staff make the call. A Wall Connector and circuit that stay inside the garage don't change anything seen from outside, which keeps the question from coming up.
One charger for a Tesla and another EV
If your garage holds a Tesla and an EV from another brand, the Universal Wall Connector can charge both, one at a time. Its handle opens a Tesla charge port automatically, EVs built with a NACS port plug straight in, and an integrated J1772 adapter covers cars with the older port. That means one circuit and one unit on the wall instead of two.
Del Mar is in Clean Energy Alliance's service area, so unless you've opted out, it supplies your electricity and SDG&E delivers it.

Frequently asked questions
Can I apply for a Del Mar EV charger permit online?
Yes, for the electrical permit. Del Mar accepts electrical permit applications online through eTRAKiT and no longer takes paper. If the work needs a building permit, the plans go to the Planning Department first, by email to Planning@delmar.ca.us. We handle the filing either way.
Does a Tesla Wall Connector need design review in Del Mar?
It depends on what shows from outside. Del Mar's design review has exempt, administrative and full-board tracks, and planning staff decide which one applies; the city's guide doesn't single out EV chargers. A Wall Connector mounted inside the garage, with the circuit run indoors, changes nothing on the exterior.
Can one Wall Connector charge my Tesla and a non-Tesla EV?
Yes, with the Universal Wall Connector, one car at a time. EVs with a NACS port plug in directly, and its built-in J1772 adapter covers EVs with the older port. Both run on the same circuit, so there is no second installation.
Ready to charge at home?
Send a photo of your panel and where the car parks. We quote a fixed price and carry out the installation ourselves.
