Tesla Wall Connector Installation in La Jolla
La Jolla Wall Connector installs come in two kinds. For a house, the City of San Diego treats a garage charger as a Simple Permit with no plans, so the paperwork is light and the real work is getting power to the parking spot. For a Village condo, a historic home or a shared garage, plans and calculations come first, and Tesla's settings for sharing power and limiting who can charge start to matter.

Permits and setups for a La Jolla Wall Connector
Houses: the Simple Permit
The City of San Diego's Information Bulletin 187 puts a charger for a single-family home, duplex or townhouse in its Simple Permit category: applied for online, with no plans submitted for review. For a private garage, the load calculation goes on the city's circuit card, which stays on site with Tesla's installation instructions for the inspector. Inspectors aren't allowed to open energized equipment, so someone has to be there to open the panel for them. That is us. The May 2026 bulletin lists the inspection fee at $264.25 per charger.
Historic homes and condos: plans first
Two common La Jolla situations fall outside the Simple Permit. A designated historic resource, or a home in a historic district, takes the regular route. So does a charger in a multifamily building's shared garage. For those, the city wants a site or floor plan, accessibility plans and electrical plans signed by an electrical engineer or a C-10 contractor, plus a plan check fee of $353.13 per charger on top of the inspection. As a C-10 contractor, we can sign the electrical plans.
Sharing a garage with other Tesla owners
In a shared condo garage, two settings do most of the work. With Group Power Management, as many as six Gen 3 units can run off a single circuit and split its capacity among whichever cars are plugged in, which matters in an older Village building with little service to spare. Charging Access Control limits each unit to its owner's vehicles, so a neighbor's Tesla can't use your charger in an open garage. Both are set when the units are commissioned in the Tesla app. Your association's approval and the building's electrical capacity still come first.

What San Diego homeowners say
Frequently asked questions
Do I need plans to permit a Tesla charger at my La Jolla house?
Usually not. A charger for a single-family home, duplex or townhouse qualifies as a Simple Permit through the City of San Diego, applied for online without plans. The exception is a designated historic resource or a home in a historic district, which needs the regular permit route with plans.
What does the City of San Diego charge to permit a home EV charger?
Information Bulletin 187 (May 2026) lists an inspection fee of $264.25 per charger for a single-family home, duplex or townhouse, with no plan check fee. Multifamily and other installations that need plans add a plan check fee of $353.13 per charger. Our fixed price includes the permit.
My garage is a floor below the panel. Is that a problem?
No, it changes the route. On hillside homes the circuit runs down through the walls or along the outside in conduit, and the length affects the wire size and the price. The Universal Wall Connector's 24-foot cable gives some freedom on where it mounts in the garage, so it can go where the wiring arrives rather than right beside the car.
Ready to charge at home?
Two photos are enough to start: your panel with the door open, and the garage wall where the Wall Connector should go. We will tell you whether the house qualifies for the Simple Permit and price the install.
