Hardwire it. The Wall Connector supports up to 48A hardwired on a 60A circuit, which is meaningfully faster than the 32A you get from a mobile connector on a 14-50. It also avoids the GFCI receptacle requirement that causes nuisance trips on some installs.
Most San Diego homes land between $749 and $1,600 for a Level 2 install when the panel has an open double-pole slot and the run from panel to garage is under about 40 feet. Longer runs, trenching to a detached garage, or a panel with no capacity push it higher. If the panel needs replacing, budget $2,800 to $6,500 on top. We give a fixed price after a load calculation, not a range.
Yes. A 240V circuit for an EV charger requires an electrical permit everywhere in San Diego County. Incorporated cities issue their own; unincorporated areas like Spring Valley, Alpine and Ramona go through County Planning & Development Services. We pull the permit and schedule the inspection as part of the job. Unpermitted work can create problems when you sell the house and may affect an insurance claim.
A typical Level 2 install is a half-day, three to five hours. Panel upgrades run a full day and involve a planned power shutoff. Trenching to a detached garage adds time depending on the distance and surface.
Often, yes. A load-management device lets the charger share capacity with the rest of the house and back off when demand is high. On a 100A panel that is usually a few thousand dollars cheaper than a service upgrade, and because most people charge overnight when the house is quiet, the car still reaches full charge. We tell you which option fits after running the load calculation.
A hardwired charger connects directly to the circuit and can run at higher amperage ā up to 48A on a 60A circuit ā so it charges faster. A NEMA 14-50 outlet caps at 40A continuous and lets you unplug the unit and take it with you. Outlets are also required to be GFCI protected, which occasionally causes nuisance tripping with certain chargers. For a charger that stays put, hardwired is usually the better install.
Tesla Wall Connector, ChargePoint Home Flex, Emporia, Grizzl-E, Wallbox Pulsar Plus, Autel, Enphase, and the mobile connectors that ship with most EVs. If you have already bought a unit we will install it. If you have not, we will tell you honestly which ones we see fail and which ones we do not.
Not from the federal government any more. The federal EV charger credit (section 30C) ended for equipment placed in service after June 30, 2026, so it does not apply to new installs. SDG&E offers EV-specific time-of-use rate plans that make overnight charging cheaper, and its charger-related programs change from year to year, so check SDG&Eās current EV pages before you buy. We can point you at what is available, but we are electricians, not tax advisors.
Yes, though the path is different. California law has created pathways for EV charging in common-interest developments, but your association can still impose reasonable conditions and the install may need to be metered to your unit. Send us your HOA rules and a photo of the panel and we will tell you what is realistic.
Send a photo of your panel and where the car parks. We quote a fixed price and carry out the installation ourselves.
