How to permit a home EV charger in Carlsbad
Carlsbad runs home EV chargers through an expedited permit with its own eligibility checklist, form B-65A. Everything is submitted online, the permit is generated the next business day after the fee is paid, and most installs need a single inspection.
Checked against the office's own website on October 12, 2026.

Step by step in Carlsbad
Check eligibility on form B-65A
The B-65A checklist confirms the charger qualifies for expedited review under the city code and state law. Fill it in and sign it; it goes in with the application.
Gather the four documents
The residential permit application (form B-1), a circuit card (form B-36), the charger maker's installation details and specifications, and the completed B-65A.
Submit online and pay
Upload everything through the Customer Self Service portal under the Residential PME permit type, then pay the fee online. Applications are processed in the order received.
Receive the permit
The system generates the approved permit and the inspection record card the next business day after payment. Work has to start within 365 days or the permit lapses.
Install the charger
Keep the permit card, the approved documents and the maker's installation guide on site for the inspector.
Pass the inspection
One inspection after the wiring and charger are in is normally enough. Request it online or at 442-339-2725. A representative of the installing contractor must be on site.
What can change the process in Carlsbad
Homes in an HOA
Carlsbad's permit doesn't cover association approval. Many neighborhoods, including Aviara, Bressi Ranch and La Costa, have architectural committees with their own application. California Civil Code section 4745 limits how far an association can restrict a charger in your own garage or space.
Let us handle the permit
Our C-10 licensed, in-house team files the permit, books the inspection and meets the inspector, and the permit is part of the fixed price. Read about EV charger installation in Carlsbad or Tesla Wall Connector installation in Carlsbad.
