Tesla Wall Connector Installation Cost in San Diego

The short version

  • The charger: $585 for the Wall Connector, $660 for the Universal Wall Connector, at Tesla's US shop in October 2026.
  • Tesla's own estimate for a standard installation is $750 to $1,500, permit included. Long wire runs and panel upgrades add to that.
  • The federal tax credit for home chargers ended for installations after June 30, 2026.

Our Tesla Wall Connector installations run $799–$2,400, permit and inspection included, with one fixed price once we've seen your panel and parking spot.

The hardware

  • Wall Connector, $585. Tesla's NACS plug, up to 48 amps (11.5 kW, up to 44 miles of range an hour), a 24-foot cable, Wi-Fi, and a four-year residential warranty.
  • Universal Wall Connector, $660. The same charger with a built-in J1772 adapter, so it also charges EVs that don't use Tesla's plug.

Both showed as out of stock in Tesla's US shop when we checked in October 2026. Tesla notes that some installers can supply the Wall Connector as part of the job, so ask before you wait for a restock. Tesla also requires a qualified electrician to install it.

32 amps or 48 amps

This choice changes the price more than anything except the wire run. At its full 48 amps, the Wall Connector needs a 60-amp circuit. But Tesla lists the Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive, Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive and Model Y All-Wheel Drive as drawing at most 32 amps (7.7 kW), and says a Wall Connector for the rear-wheel-drive Model 3 and Model Y can go on a 40-amp breaker.

A 40-amp circuit means thinner wire, a cheaper run and more room left in the panel, sometimes the difference between needing a panel upgrade and not. At 32 amps the car still gains up to about 30 miles of range an hour, a full day's driving in a couple of hours overnight. If the panel is tight, the Wall Connector can be set as low as 12 amps.

What drives the installation cost

  • Distance and route from the panel. A garage wall beside the panel is the cheapest case. Runs through an attic, along a garage ceiling or under a yard cost more.
  • Panel capacity. A load calculation shows whether the service can take a 40- or 60-amp circuit. If it can't, see our panel upgrade cost guide for the price of an upgrade and the cheaper alternatives.
  • Indoors or out. An outdoor mount needs weather-rated fittings, and near the coast, hardware that holds up to salt air.
  • Two Teslas. Two Wall Connectors can share one circuit with Tesla's power sharing, rather than needing a second circuit.

The lower-cost alternative is a NEMA 14-50 outlet on a 50-amp breaker with Tesla's Mobile Connector, which charges at up to 32 amps. Our NEMA 14-50 outlet installations run $649–$1,600.

Permit fees and steps by city

A Wall Connector is a new 240-volt circuit, and every permit office we checked in the county requires a permit and an inspection for it. Most don't publish a flat fee. The ones that do:

  • City of San Diego, including La Jolla: $264.25 per charger for the inspection on a house, duplex or townhouse, with no plan check (Information Bulletin 187, May 2026). Condos and apartments need plans and a $353.13 plan check per charger.
  • El Cajon: a $276.44 standard permit fee, not counting any panel upgrade.
  • National City: a $15 filing fee plus the plan fee, paid when plans are submitted.
  • San Marcos: the city pays a rebate of up to $900 per charger while its funding lasts.

The federal credit is gone

The federal credit for home chargers (30C) paid 30% of the cost, up to $1,000, in eligible low-income or non-urban census tracts, but only for installations completed by June 30, 2026. A Wall Connector installed now gets no federal credit. San Marcos's city rebate is the only homeowner charger rebate our permit research turned up.

Once it's installed, the rate plan decides what charging costs. Our guide to SDG&E's EV rate plans shows what you'd pay to charge overnight in your city.
